2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Chevy schemers figure there is still a pool of carbuyers who want a sport coupe that can carry five passengers in stretch-out room. In fact, those schemers figure that if they get the product and the price right, they'll attract some 70,000 buyers a year while keeping the Chevy brand alive and desirable in the minds of younger drivers.
So Chevy planners went to their success: NASCAR. To say the body of the 2000 Monte Carlo is race inspired is to say Beethoven composed music. The 2 1/2-in.-shorter hood, the stretched-out C-pillar and the raised trunk are designed to work with fast flowing air currents like those encountered by Dale Earnhardt and Jeff Gordon.
Construction details, however, are taken from the new Chevrolet Impala. Monte Carlo has the same 110-in. wheelbase, a slightly shorter 197.9-in. overall length and nearly identical V6 front-drive powertrain. Base LS models offer a 3.4-liter 180-hp V6 as the standard powerplant. The higher performance SS model uses a 3.8-liter 200-horsepower V6. SS models have a more aggressive 3.29:1 final drive ratio than the Impala's 3.05:1.
All Monte Carlos have four-wheel disc ABS and a tire pressure checking system. Inside, SS models have a more elaborate instrument package that includes almost too many gauges in a small space. The simpler, less busy gauge layout of the LS is easier to read, yet covers all the necessary info in the same space.
Ultimately, Monte Carlo depends on styling as its major attraction to buyers. From the "expressive" shape of the headlamps, to the "flowing lines" of the sail panels to the clear lens of the taillamps, the Monte is designed to "get noticed at traffic lights." My own experience, however, shows that Chevy may be a bit optimistic. After a drive of four hours on mixed roadways in a can't-miss-me orange-red MC, I noted little interest in my car by other drivers. –Jim Dunne

Paintings of Vermeer

Johannes Vermeer created luscious canvases of limited scope: generally women and men in seventeenth-century rooms, but also occasional outdoor scenes, allegory and religious themes. The fascination lies with the intricate combination of light, color, proportion and scale that enhances the moods and reality of the subjects. http://www.cacr.caltech.edu/~roy/vermeer/
